Drivers in Mildenhall are being urged to comply with the parking regulations, to ensure that traffic flows freely through the town centre, and pedestrians and other road users stay safe.
The Mildenhall Safer Neighbourhood Team has received numerous complaints of illegal parking from both the public and local councillors. The main areas causing concern are King Street, St Andrews Street and the High Street in Mildenhall, much of which centres around drivers stopping to use the shopping or banking facilities.
Acting Sergeant Peter Maxfield says, “In an ideal world it would be nice not to issue any parking tickets – however a minority of drivers are flouting the parking regulations, which is having an adverse effect on traffic flow and the safety of pedestrians in the town centre.
“Although local officers are currently issuing parking tickets on a regular basis, and moving vehicles on from where they are parked illegally, it seems to have had little impact in addressing the problem. It would seem that the only solution left is a period of elevated enforcement. There really is no excuse for illegal parking in Mildenhall as there is sufficient parking available, it is all free and in close proximity to the town’s amenities.
“Double yellow lines are in place in these areas indicating no parking at any time except for disabled badge holders, and single yellow lines are accompanied by signs indicating the period of restriction that is in place.”
Mildenhall Parish Councillor George Hayes adds, “ This action is being taken due to the high level of complaints received from parishioners and I fully support the police in tackling this persistent problem. It is a concern for many residents in Mildenhall, affecting the safety of pedestrians and other motorists alike.
“Parking in the town is free and there really is no excuse for flouting the regulations that are in place. Irresponsible parking can also affect the emergency services, restricting their access and causing unnecessary delays.”
The current fine for parking illegally is £30.
