Cycle Thefts - Aldeburgh and Countywide

Category: Suffolk Constabulary

Police are appealing for information after a spate of pedal cycle thefts in Aldeburgh in the past few days – and are urging cyclists across the county to be vigilant and to take additional security measures after further thefts in the Lowestoft and Ipswich areas.

Since last Tuesday, 12 August, eight bikes have been stolen in Aldeburgh and, although some have been recovered, officers are urging cyclists to remember to lock up their bikes.

Among the most recent thefts in Aldeburgh is a ladies chestnut/ mottled tortoiseshell mountain bike with a front basket and rack on the back, which was stolen from a front garden at Crag Path between 11.45pm on Friday 15 and 3pm on Saturday 16 August. A unisex blue mountain bike taken at the same time from the same location was later found in a garden at The Plantation in Aldeburgh along with two other cycles.

Here officers are asking anyone who may have lost a bike to get in touch with Leiston Police Station as they may be able to match the other found cycles with their owners.

However Aldeburgh is not the only town to have seen a number of thefts in recent weeks. At Lowestoft there have been 19 thefts since the start of the month while in the Ipswich area there have been 45.

Police across the county are urging cyclists to remember to lock up their bikes and to take simple security measures to try to reduce the chances of becoming the victim of a thief.

Many of the bikes stolen have been taken from gardens and have been left unlocked and police are urging cyclists to take steps to make bike thieves lives harder.

Locking your bike to something secure or putting it away safely rather than leaving it lying in the garden if you are at home can reduce the likelihood of theft.

Please postcode mark your bike – if it is stolen it makes it easier for police to return it to you if it is recovered.

And please be vigilant. If you see someone cutting or breaking a lock off a cycle, or taking it from a neighbours garden when you know it doesn’t belong to them, please call police immediately, using 999 if required. If you see a bike being loaded into a vehicle please take the registration number as this may help trace the offenders.

Anyone with information about individuals involved in cycle theft – or handing stolen pedal cycles – is asked to call Suffolk Police on 01473 613500.
