Distraction Burglary - Baylam
Category: Suffolk Constabulary
Detectives are appealing for information following a distraction burglary at a home on Upper Street, Baylham between 6.30am and 7.05am on Monday 25th August.
A woman in her 70s answered a knock at the door, where she found two males, one of which was holding a young boy. The male asked if he could bring the child inside as they waited for an ambulance. The woman refused as she felt the boy didn’t look ill, but the men pushed through the door into the house.
The boy was put on her sofa, and the woman, feeling scared and intimidated, stayed with him. The men then searched the house for around half an hour. They then picked up the boy and left. Nothing was stolen. The ambulance service has confirmed that no calls were taken during this time relating to the boy.
The first male is described as white, 6 foot tall, in his early 40s, of slim build and was wearing a long beige tweed coat and a trilby hat.
The second male is described as white 5 foot 11 inches tall, in his late 30s with short dark gelled hair and was wearing a red t-shirt and black trousers.
The boy is described as 3 or 4 years old, of large build with short dark hair and was wearing blue shorts, a white t-shirt and dirty white trainers.
Detective Inspector Jeff Yaxley says, “This is an unusual incident which has left the elderly victim very shaken and distressed. I would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the men with the boy in Baylham or the surrounding area yesterday morning, or anyone who witnessed any other suspicious activity in the village last week.”
Were you in the area at the time? Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident or the offenders to call Stowmarket CID on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Officers are also reminding residents not to let strangers into their homes and to alert police immediately using 999 if they are suspicious.
