Cabinet to save more carbon and make wildlife and landscape improvements in England's Greenest County
Category: Suffolk County Council
At Suffolk County Council's Cabinet meeting on 2 September Councillor Eddy Alcock, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Waste Management, will ask Cabinet to take a series of measures to reduce the council's carbon emissions, plan to deliver services in a changing climate, conserve landscapes and improve habitat for wildlife.
Each service within the Council will have to report on progress on reducing carbon emissions. Automated gas and electricity meters will be installed to allow efficient monitoring that will enable both carbon and financial savings to be made. A successful project to install wood fuelled boilers in council premises to replace the use of harmful fossil fuels will be considered for expansion. A conference in Spring 2009 will bring together all councils and other public agencies to coordinate efforts to plan to adapt to a changing climate in Suffolk - carbon reduction should be part of the ambition for local government under new unitary council(s).
Councillor Jeremy Pembroke, Leader of Suffolk County Council said: "We mean business on reducing carbon. Everything that makes Suffolk a great place to live and work depends on our environment, so we have to lead this great community effort. I congratulate all our partners for their work on making the Suffolk Sandlings a better wildlife habitat, and welcome the continued investment in the Dedham Vale. The County Council is putting our money and our efforts into leading the way to make the Greenest County a reality. I hope every organisation and every person in the county will join this crucial work."
