Extra cash for Mid Suffolk
Category: Mid Suffolk District Council
Mid Suffolk District Council is delighted to announce that the Housing Corporation's National Affordable Housing Programme will invest almost two million pounds in the district between 2008 - 2011. The announcement was made at the end of February and is good news for people seeking affordable housing in the area.
The Council works in partnership with four Housing Associations to build new affordable homes for rent and shared ownership in the district. This funding will enable the provision of 61 new units of accommodation across the district over the next three years. It is the second highest award in the Greater Haven Gateway Sub-region, of which Mid Suffolk is a member.
There will be further opportunities to develop new homes, both through the statutory planning process and through additional funding opportunities between now and 2011. It is Housing Corporation money that enables schemes such as the redevelopment of the site in Steeles Road, Woolpit and the eco-homes exemplar scheme in Elmswell to go ahead. The funding is distributed between the four housing association partners; Circle Anglia, Flagship, Hastoe, and Orwell.
In welcoming the announcement, Councillor Sara Michell, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said, "Affordable and decent housing is a strategic priority for Mid Suffolk Council. We have met our target of providing 80 new affordable homes per year for the past few years and are well on target to achieve the Government's Decent Homes Standard in our own housing stock by the deadline of 2010".
