Fit a smoke alarm... It could save your life

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service is warning that lives are at risk in Suffolk as they continue to attend a significant number of property fires in which there is no smoke alarm fitted or where the smoke alarm fitted does not work.

Assistant Divisional Officer Ken Williamson said; "Smoke alarms are inexpensive and protect you and your family from serious harm.

"We have attended a number of house fires recently where there has not been an alarm installed or where this had not worked at the time of a fire. In all of these emergencies the residents put themselves, their families and their home at risk.

"A fire can start at any time of the day or night and without a warning from a smoke alarm this could result in a tragedy. It's important to remember that smoke alarms are not just an early warning of fire; they are sometimes your only warning."

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service carry out free home fire safety checks to those who are most at risk. They fit a free smoke alarm as part of the process, provide fire safety advice and help to identify fire risks within a home.
