Reaction to the news from the Boundary Committee regarding the latest proposals for consultation

Cllr Jeremy Pembroke, Leader of Suffolk County Council, said: "We are delighted that the Boundary Committee listened to the very clear message that Lowestoft is a valued part of our county, and will remain so.

"Suffolk County Council remains firmly committed to the single unitary option for the whole county, because this is the right option to protect the future of vital services in our county. In fact 'one Suffolk' is now given equal mention in the new consultation proposals.

"In this current economic recession it is essential that local government makes every penny count. We know that central government funding will be reduced significantly at least until 2018 and so smaller unitary councils will not be viable - only 'one Suffolk' is big enough to deliver quality services when less money is available.

"Suffolk County Council is the most cost efficient county council in England, and this year we set our lowest council tax increase ever. We will use this outstanding track record of financial management to continue to make a difference to local people, if we get the chance to run the new unitary authority. We are delighted that the Boundary Committee acknowledges in its report today that we are a 4 star authority with the 'corporate capacity to deliver future plans...'

"One Suffolk provides a stronger voice to influence government to bring extra money to benefit our communities. It provides a simpler way for people to access the services that matter to them. It prevents wasteful duplication of resources which costs taxpayers more. It protects vital services for the most vulnerable in our communities.

"We are delighted that the Boundary Committee accepted our arguments that Lowestoft should remain in Suffolk - now we want them to listen to our arguments that only the 'one Suffolk' option is the right one for Suffolk.

"We would urge everyone in the county to make their views known to the Boundary Committee before the consultation closing date of 14 May 2009. This is the best way that people can help us to save our county."
