Big clean up of local nature reserve
Suffolk County Council, Greenways Project and Babergh District Council joined forces with BBC Radio Suffolk's "Don't Be A Tosser" campaign to hold a major clean up of the Spring Wood local nature reserve in Ipswich on Saturday 4th April 2009.
Over 75 volunteers gave up their Saturday morning to help clear the area of litter and fly tipped waste, collecting a staggering 20 cubic yards of waste in just three hours. The items found included parts of a dumped motorbike and some unwanted Christmas stockings.
The site which is located between the A14 and Stoke Park Drive, was the area of land that prompted BBC Radio Suffolk to launch the campaign in 2008 and this event was arranged to see just how much litter the area had attracted in just 12 months.
Councillor Eddy Alcock, Suffolk County Council's Portfolio Holder for Environment and Waste Management, said; "The amount of litter and fly tipping that was collected at this event is staggering and it has made a great difference to this delightful site just outside Ipswich.
"I am pleased that so many people volunteered to help clear up this site and thanks go to all the other groups and individuals that have been taking part in litter picks across the county throughout the year. Events such as this are a great way of making sure Suffolk is created the Greenest County in the UK"
