‘Tracking Time’ - Come and discover your local history

A touring history exhibition created by adults with learning disabilities will be opened by the Leader of Suffolk County Council, Jeremy Pembroke on 15 September 2009, at Endeavour House, Ipswich.

Visitors will be able to watch a film showing the club members in action, explore handling boxes, try on masks and make their own contributions.

Cllr Jeremy Pembroke said, “This is a brilliant achievement and a good example of how a hands on and personal approach to our heritage really helps bring things to life”

The exhibition will continue in the Ipswich library from 26 September.

Based around themes of food, homes, clothes, events and entertainment, the “Time Trackers” exhibition is the work of 18 members (ranging in age from 20 to 60 years) from two Museum Clubs based at Moyse’s Hall in Bury St Edmunds and Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury.

This is the culmination of a two-year project run by the Suffolk Museums Partnership in partnership with Suffolk County Council’s Adult and Community Services and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and MLA Renaissance in the Regions.

Club members took part in weekly activities which included dressing up in historic costumes (from a Roman Centurion to a member of the Home Guard); creating a Victorian building spotter’s history trail; making artefacts such as oil lamps, mosaics and Anglo Saxon jewellery; and visiting local museums and heritage sites including Kentwell Hall, Colchester Castle and the Suffolk Record Office.

Steph Parmee, Museum Clubs Project Officer said: “We’ve had a great time exploring our local heritage and we hope that visitors to the exhibition will not only see how hard our club members have worked to bring the past alive, but will also discover something new and fascinating for themselves.”
