Most Efficient Council to invest in services
Category: Mid Suffolk District Council
Mid Suffolk District Council has confirmed that it will invest £258,000 in service improvements during 2008/09.
This is despite the Council's funding from Government increasing by less than inflation during the next 3 years.
The Council will be investing in its planning service and developing its capacity to increase the supply of affordable housing. The Council will be spending money on green initiatives such as an anti-chewing gum litter campaign, and will be setting up ways for residents to engage directly with the Council.
MSDC’s share of the Council Tax bill will increase by 4.5%, giving a Band D figure of £142.50, an increase of 12 pence per week. The Council has also frozen car parking charges in Stowmarket for a fourth successive year.
Councillor Derrick Haley, Finance Portfolio Holder, said:
"It's regrettable that the Council Tax has had to go up, but the Government is to blame because they have not given us enough money to cope with inflation. However, for most people the weekly rise is less than half the cost of a second class stamp."
Councillor Tim Passmore, Leader of the Council, said:
"Mid Suffolk has done more than any other Council to reduce costs and make efficiencies by working with other organisations. We will continue this journey and we will influence the debate about the future of local government in Suffolk".
