Mid Suffolk outlines its view on Local Government Structural Review of Suffolk

Mid Suffolk District Council has today given its view on local government reorganisation following the Full Council meeting on 3 April 2008. Councillors at the meeting agreed that the concept of a single Suffolk unitary should be submitted to the Boundary Committee as its preferred option.

Chief Executive of Mid Suffolk District Council, Andrew Good, said:

"Mid Suffolk has taken a principled view of what is the best for the people of Suffolk, and that is a single unitary council. It is vital that Suffolk and its people have one single strong voice and that this is championed through strong leadership and very local delivery arrangements. We believe that one authority will bring the powerful and radical empowerment that our local neighbourhoods need and allow their voice to be heard wherever they are in the county."

He continued:

"There are a number of issues that affect and shape our communities, for example regeneration, that need the strong presence, overview and leadership that a single body would bring. Suffolk needs to be heard on the big issues. A single council would also help to give local neighbourhoods a strong voice by shaping the decisions from the grass roots."

Leader of Mid Suffolk District Council, Cllr Tim Passmore said:

"This is a principled decision that Mid Suffolk and its councillors took, and it is the best for Suffolk and its people. I am pleased we have a substantial majority on this recommendation and I am looking forward to working with colleagues and other sectors across the county in the future."
