Hundreds of people have signed up and already taken part in community litter picks to help towards Creating the greenest county.

Just over a week in to the 2008 Suffolk Spring Clean Fortnight initiative, a vast amount of litter has been collected and community areas have been tidied up.

There's still time to take part in your own local event by contacting your local borough of district co-ordinator - details can be found at www.greensuffolk.org Recycling and litter bags as well as litter pickers will be provided and you can take part throughout the year, not just within this fortnight.

David Barker, Chair of Creating the Greenest County said on behalf of all the partners involved in the initiative: " Although borough and district councils have responsibility for clearing up litter, the sheer amount of rubbish which is carelessly discarded each year is very difficult to keep on top of. If we all take more responsibility for our litter and help to keep the environment clean we can make a real difference. Rubbish strewn areas can make it look like we don't care and it tends to breed further littering behaviour. Areas which are tidier tend to discourage dumping grounds even starting."

The annual clean up initiative is backed by Suffolk County Council, the seven District and Borough Councils, Suffolk - Creating the greenest County initiative and Radio Suffolk's "Don't be a tosser" campaign.
